The Asha workers’ protest reaches a new level from today, with Asha workers staging a hunger strike in front of the Secretariat. Association General Secretary M.A. Bindu, along with Asha workers Thankamani and Sheeja, will begin their hunger strike at the protest venue in front of the Secretariat from 11 AM today.
Kerala Asha Health Workers Association State Vice President S. Mini stated that the government was not willing to hold discussions to ensure demands such as an increase in honorarium and the introduction of pension benefits. The Health Minister urged the workers to end the strike without accepting any of their demands. Although the minister asked them to approach the matter realistically, the protesters did not back down. As the government did not consider or approve any of their demands, the Asha workers declared that the protest would continue.
Ahead of the hunger strike, the protesters alleged that the discussion held by the government yesterday was merely an eyewash. They claimed that no new proposals or considerations were presented during the talks.
