Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning predicting isolated summer showers across all districts in Kerala over the next five days. There is also a possibility of thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds blowing at speeds of 30 to 40 kmph (with a maximum of 50 kmph) today and on April 24 and 25. Authorities have urged the public to remain cautious.
A yellow alert has been issued for Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, and Thrissur districts, where heavy rain is expected. “Heavy rain” refers to rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within 24 hours. Given recent lightning-related fatalities, IMD has advised people to take necessary precautions. Additionally, light rainfall is expected in isolated areas of Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam districts within the next three hours.
Yesterday evening, Thiruvananthapuram witnessed intense rainfall, recording 77 mm of rain in just one hour. The city center received 77 mm, while 67 mm was recorded in Kizhakke Kotta. Heavy rain led to waterlogging in several areas, and flights scheduled to land at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport were diverted due to lightning and adverse weather conditions. The IMD has also predicted more rain in the city this evening.
