Pathanamthitta: Bhaskara Karunavar murder case accused Sherin has been released from prison on parole. She has been granted parole for two weeks. The parole was approved following the controversy over the earlier decision to grant her remission of sentence. Meanwhile, the jail department clarified that the parole was part of a routine procedure.
The cabinet recommendation to grant remission to Sherin had sparked major controversy. The recommendation for remission reached the cabinet through the Home Department within a month. The controversy arose because the remission was granted solely to Sherin, despite there being many other eligible inmates. Even severely ill prisoners who have served over 20 years remain behind bars. It was in this context that the preferential treatment for Sherin became a matter of public debate. The official explanation was that remission was granted after she completed 14 years of her sentence.
Sherin is currently serving her sentence at Kannur Central Jail. Bhaskara Karunavar, a native of Chengannur, was murdered on November 8, 2009. Sherin, his daughter-in-law, along with her lover, was found guilty of killing Bhaskara Karunavar, a Malayali American. Initially believed to be a murder during a robbery, the investigation later revealed Sherin’s involvement. The Fast Track Court in Mavelikkara sentenced her to life imprisonment, a verdict upheld by the High Court. Sherin also approached the Supreme Court, but to no avail.
