Cinema Needs Boundless Creative Freedom – Premkumar Responds to ‘Empuraan’ Controversy

Thiruvananthapuram: Chalachitra Academy Chairman Prem Kumar has responded to the controversy surrounding Mohanlal-Prithviraj’s film Empuraan. Prem Kumar said that there should be unlimited freedom of expression in cinema and that he does not agree with putting the scissors on.

The opposition came after the film was screened after being censored. Kerala is not an intolerant society. Even left-right and left-wing films have been screened here, and no one opposed them. It is now that intolerance is being shown. Art unites the world, and that is not part of hatred. Mohanlal’s regret may have been a personal opinion. The Chalachitra Academy chairman also said that a film should be seen as a film.

At the same time, the re-edited version of Empuraan has started showing in many theaters in the state. The downloading of the movie is in the final stages in some theaters, including in Kochi. The movie, which came with 24 changes, has been shortened by 2.08 minutes. Although there is a slight decrease in online bookings for the movie, theater owners say that the re-editing has not affected it.

The original version of Empuraan, which hit the theatres on the 27th, has been cut in 17 places. The name of the main villain character has been changed from Bajrangi to Balraj. The name has been changed and dubbed in 18 places. The scenes of women being raped have been removed. Some scenes related to the Gujarat riots have been changed. The NIA logo will not be shown. The scene where the villain character calls the Union Home Minister has also been removed.
