Tamil Nadu: Parked Car Hit by Lorry from Behind, Three Killed

Chennai : A tipper lorry rammed into the back of a car that was stopped at a traffic signal. Three people, including a one-year-old child, died. The speeding tipper lorry lost control and rammed into the back of the car. Four people, including another seven-year-old child, are being treated for injuries. Their condition is critical, officials said.

The incident took place at the Singaperumal temple in Chengalpet district of Tamil Nadu. The injured have been admitted to Chengalpet Medical College Hospital. The accident involved members of a family who had come from Madurai to Chennai to attend a function. The accident occurred when they were returning to Madurai after the function. Karthik (35), his wife Nandini (30), daughter Ilamathi (7), son Sai Velan (1), and Nandini’s parents Ayyanar (65) and Deva Punjari (60) were in the car.

Around midnight, the car they were travelling in stopped at a traffic signal near the Singaperumal Kovil on the Chennai-Trichy National Highway. A container lorry was also parked in front of the car. At this time, a tipper lorry, which was speeding from behind, lost control and crashed into the back of the car. Due to the impact of the collision, the car, which had moved forward, crashed into the back of the car parked in front and was crushed. The car was almost completely destroyed after being caught between two heavy vehicles.

Drivers of other vehicles and those present in the area rushed to the scene and carried out rescue operations. They informed the police. Ayyanar and driver Saravanan died instantly. Five others were admitted to Chengalpet Medical College Hospital. One-year-old Sai later died. All the others are undergoing treatment with serious injuries. Traffic on the national highway was disrupted for two hours following the accident. The police have registered a case and started an investigation.
