Death of Malayali Family Leaves Deep Wounds

Alappuzha: A Malayali family died in a fire in a room on the second floor of the Abbasil apartment, where Malayalees live the most in Kuwait. Relatives and locals of Neeretupura are in shock after a family of four died in Kuwait after returning home. Mathews and his family returned to Kuwait on Thursday night after a month-long vacation.

40-year-old Matthews and his wife Lynne had been living in exile in Kuwait for more than 15 years. Matthews is an employee of Reuters and Lini is a staff nurse at the Ministry of Kuwait. Daughter Irene was in eighth grade and son Isaac was in fourth grade at Bhawans School in Kuwait. Mathews built a new house two years ago. Mathews’ mother is the only one at home.

Mathews is the youngest of four siblings. Elder sister is also in Kuwait. Union Minister Suresh Gopi and Mavelikkara MP Kodikunnil Suresh have contacted the Indian Ambassador to Kuwait and External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar to make arrangements to bring the body back to the country as soon as possible.

Mathews and his family returned from the country to their flat in Abbasiya, Kuwait on Friday evening. The accident happened while sleeping at night. On seeing smoke rising from the second floor of the six-storey building, people nearby alerted the police and the fire force.
