Do Not Call Any Region of the Country ‘Pakistan,’ Supreme Court Issues Strong Criticism

Delhi: The Supreme Court criticized the Karnataka high court judge’s Pakistan reference. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud verbally said that you cannot call any part of India as Pakistan. Chief Justice said that it is basically against the integrity of the country.

The Supreme Court directed that the judges should avoid making remarks against any section and against women. The Supreme Court also decided that no further action should be taken in the wake of Justice Ved Vyasachar Sreesananda’s expression of regret in the open court. The Supreme Court voluntarily intervened in an incident where Justice Ved Vyasachar Sreesananda called an area of Bengaluru as Pakistan and made misogynistic remarks about a lawyer.

Apart from the Chief Justice, a bench comprising Justices S Khanna, BR Gavai, S Kanth and H Roy sought a report from the Karnataka High Court on the judge’s remarks. “If you go to the Mysuru Road flyover, you will see 10 people in each autorickshaw. If you turn right from there, you will reach Pakistan, not India. The reality is that the law does not apply there” – a video of the judge saying during the hearing came out. On another occasion, the same judge told the lawyer during an argument that he seemed to know everything about the opposing party. It seems that even the color of the underwear can be revealed”.

Both these remarks led to widespread protests on social media. The bench directed that the judges should be careful not to make any comments against any section or against women. Referring to the report of the Registrar General of the Karnataka High Court, the Supreme Court said that Justice Sreesananda’s observations were irrelevant.
