Senior CPM leader and former minister Elamaram Kareem has launched a protest against the Pinarayi government, opposing the privatization of the Water Authority. Under Karim’s leadership, the protest aims to prevent the privatization of the Water Authority, warning that such a move would lead to increased drinking water prices. He emphasized that the Kerala government should not entrust drinking water distribution to private companies, as it could turn water into a commercial commodity. Kareem stressed that clean drinking water should be made available to the public as needed, and there should be no hindrance to its distribution.
The protest raised demands such as canceling the EDIB contract, maintaining public sector control over drinking water distribution, and preventing the commercialization of water services. However, the question arises whether such a major leader should resort to protests over an issue that could potentially be resolved with a simple phone call to the Chief Minister, and how the government and the protest will align on this matter.
