Actor and Film Academy Chairman Premkumar has stated that censorship is needed for Malayalam serials, comparing their impact on society to that of Endosulfan. He emphasized that some serials are harmful to society and that censorship is essential for the medium. However, Premkumar clarified that he was not calling for a blanket condemnation of all serials.
He explained that both films, serials, and web series cater to large audiences, and while he supports artistic freedom, he believes that censorship is required for television serials, unlike in cinema where censorship already exists. He also pointed out some practical issues surrounding the lack of censorship for serials.
Meanwhile, State Women’s Commission Chairperson P. Satyadevi had earlier stated that censorship is needed in the serial industry, citing the harmful messages being conveyed to society. She also noted that there are many people dependent on the serial industry for their livelihood and that the Commission is considering the issues faced by women in the serial industry.
