Heavy Rain Expected in Kerala; Yellow Alert Issued in 4 Districts Today

The India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for four districts in the state today: Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Thrissur, and Malappuram. Isolated heavy rainfall is predicted in these areas.

In the next three hours, the department has warned of light to moderate rain with thunderstorms in isolated places in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Alappuzha districts, along with strong winds reaching speeds of up to 40 km/h. Light rain is also expected in isolated areas of Idukki and Malappuram districts.

Meanwhile, Skymet, a private weather forecasting agency, has predicted the first monsoon season forecast for this year. It forecasts that the monsoon in 2025 will bring normal rainfall across the country. An average of 868.6 millimeters of rainfall is expected during the four-month period from June to September. The western ghats, especially Kerala, coastal Karnataka, and Goa, are likely to experience above-average rainfall. In contrast, northeastern states and northern hilly regions are expected to receive less rainfall than usual.

This season’s El Niño phenomenon has been weak and short-lived. The signs of El Niño are now fading, though the possibility of a weakening El Niño still cannot be ruled out, according to the forecast.
