Vishu 2025: Malayalees Welcome the New Year with Hope

Today, Vishu rekindles memories of prosperity and agricultural abundance. Malayalees welcomed Vishu with the golden sight of hope and expectations. The celebration of Vishu includes the ritual of offering “kani” along with “kainettam,” a traditional gesture of blessing. For Malayalees, who wake up to see the first sight of the “kani” in the early hours, the tradition is something that cannot be missed.

In the agricultural backdrop, “kani vellari” and fruits will be offered, serving as a reminder of the agricultural wealth. After viewing the “kani,” it’s time for “kainettam,” where the elders of the household offer their blessings. This is followed by the customary “sadya” , marking the connection with local traditions. Each celebration also brings back memories of the past year.

For farmers in Kerala, Vishu marks the preparation time for the upcoming harvest season. A new beginning. New hopes. Last night, homes were busy preparing the “kani,” with offerings placed before the “nilavilakku”  and the idol of Lord Krishna. The “kani” along with fruits, coins, and mirrors were arranged . This morning, the first sight of the golden “kani” brought a new light to the dawn.
