Hema Committee Report: Supreme Court to Hear Petitions Today

New Delhi: The Hema Committee report, released on August 19, has since sparked numerous allegations against several actors. The revelations from the report shed light on shocking incidents in the film industry, drawing significant public attention. The Supreme Court will today hear a set of petitions related to the report.

A bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and P.B. Varale will consider the petitions. The High Court Division Bench had earlier directed the registration and investigation of cases based on the testimonies in the Hema Committee report. However, the petitioners now seek to nullify the interim order that directed the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate.

One of the key petitions under Supreme Court consideration was filed by Sajimon Parayil, who had also approached the High Court. In addition, two prominent actresses and a makeup artist have challenged the decision to register cases, and their petitions are also part of today’s proceedings. Meanwhile, the state government has argued against overturning the High Court Division Bench’s directive.

The Kerala State Women’s Commission has claimed that Sajimon Parayil’s efforts are aimed at derailing the legal process. They argue that the petitioner is attempting to create confusion regarding the High Court’s interim order. The Commission also contends that cases have already been registered in compliance with the High Court’s directive, rendering the petition irrelevant.

The state government has reiterated its stance that filing cases based on testimonies is an obligation under the revised criminal procedural laws, regardless of whether victims have filed formal complaints. This position underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring justice and accountability in light of the Hema Committee’s findings.
