Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Legislative Assembly’s session began with significant turmoil and uproar. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had made remarks concerning Malappuram the previous day, which prompted the opposition to demand an urgent discussion at noon, but this motion was postponed.
The session was disrupted as the opposition launched strong protests from the start, escalating the situation. The Speaker cut off the microphone of the opposition leader when he raised questions about the ED (Enforcement Directorate) issue, marking the beginning of the protests.
MLA Sunny Joseph filed a notice for an urgent motion, citing that the Chief Minister’s comments related to gold smuggling and allegations of money being used for anti-national activities had undermined the state’s integrity.
During the session, a verbal spat occurred between the Speaker and the opposition leader, with the Speaker, E.N. Shamsheer, questioning who the opposition leader was. The opposition seized on this question as a point of contention, and as protests intensified, they moved to the well of the house, climbing onto the Speaker’s podium.
The situation escalated further as opposition members jumped onto the Speaker’s podium, unfurling banners and chanting slogans, asserting their discontent with the Chief Minister’s statements and the handling of the assembly proceedings.
