Kerala Awaits Crucial By-Election Results in Chelakkara, Palakkad, and Wayanad

The results of the highly anticipated by-elections in Chelakkara, Palakkad, and Wayanad are just hours away, with vote counting set to begin at 8 AM. Initial trends are expected by 9 AM, sparking significant interest across political fronts.

The relatively low voter turnout has raised concerns across all alliances. In Palakkad, the NDA, LDF, and UDF are locked in a tight battle, with each hoping to claim the seat. Meanwhile, the Congress is confident of retaining Wayanad and Palakkad, while aiming to wrest Chelakkara from the LDF. The ruling LDF, however, believes it has a strong chance of holding onto Chelakkara.

During the campaign, UDF leaders projected a majority of over 500,000 votes for Priyanka Gandhi in Wayanad. However, post-poll analysis has tempered expectations, reducing the margin to around 400,000 due to an 8% drop in voter turnout compared to the last election. UDF leaders remain optimistic, claiming they successfully mobilized their base. Meanwhile, the LDF and BJP remain apprehensive about whether their vote shares will hold steady.

In Palakkad, the political front-runners remain confident despite the turnout drop. LDF candidate Rahul Mangkoottil anticipates additional sympathy votes, while Dr. P. Sarin of the UDF projects securing 50,000 votes. NDA candidate C. Krishnakumar has boldly predicted victory by a margin exceeding 5,000 votes.

Chelakkara recorded a voter turnout of 72.77%, a 4% decline from the 2021 Assembly elections. This dip has caused jitters across political alliances. The LDF, which had previously retained the seat with a margin of 39,400 votes, anticipates a reduced lead of around 10,000 to 15,000 votes this time. Internal criticism has also emerged within the LDF over alleged complacency during the campaign.

As the final hours tick down, political Kerala waits anxiously for the outcomes that could redefine its immediate political landscape.
