Kochi: The Supreme Court has deferred the hearing of a plea filed by Amirul Islam, who was sentenced to death for the rape and murder of a law student in Perumbavoor, seeking a jail transfer. The plea will now be considered after four months. The bench comprising Justices Dipankar Datta and Manmohan decided to postpone the hearing.
The state government informed the Supreme Court that Amirul Islam’s appeal against the death sentence is already under consideration. It argued that no decision should be made on the jail transfer plea until a verdict on the appeal is reached. Accepting this argument, the court postponed the case. Senior advocate P. V. Surendranath and standing counsel Harshad V. Hameed appeared on behalf of the state government.
Meanwhile, the advocate representing Amirul Islam in the jail transfer plea has withdrawn from the case. Advocate Sriram Parakkat informed the Supreme Court of his decision to step down. Another organization had filed a separate petition challenging Amirul Islam’s death sentence, leading to the withdrawal of his counsel.
