It has been nine years since Kalabhavan Mani, who earned a special place in the hearts of Malayalis beyond cinema, became a fond memory. Born as the sixth of seven children to Raman and Ammini, Mani’s childhood was marked by financial struggles. He often reminisced about his impoverished early years in various interviews.
While studying at Chalakudy Government Boys School, he developed an interest in mimicry and acting. In 1987, he won first place in mono-act at the Kerala State School Youth Festival held in Kollam.
The years 1991-92 marked a turning point in his life when he joined the Cochin Kalabhavan troupe, earning the name “Kalabhavan Mani.” His exceptional mimicry skills and unique performances quickly gained attention among Malayalis. In 1995, he made his film debut as an auto-rickshaw driver in Aksharam. However, it was his role as Rajappan, a woodcutter, in Sallapam that made him a notable presence in the Malayalam film industry.
Mani’s acting prowess was further showcased in films like Vasanthiyum Lakshmiyum Pinne Njanum and Karumadikuttan. His performance in Vasanthiyum Lakshmiyum Pinne Njanum earned him special jury mentions at both the National and State Film Awards. He also became a beloved figure in Tamil cinema through films like Marumalarchi, Vanchinathan, Bandha Paramasivam, and Gemini.
Besides being an actor and a mimicry artist, Mani was also a singer loved by Malayalis. His folk songs won him a huge fan following. He performed in numerous stage shows across Kerala and beyond. His arrival on stage, with his signature laughter, would electrify the audience. Mani was always a celebration.
Despite facing many struggles, he kept his love for art alive, burning like an unextinguished flame. Even as he climbed the heights of fame, he held his hometown, Chalakudy, and its people close to his heart.
Kalabhavan Mani passed away on March 6, 2016. Though his journey was cut short, the beloved son of Chalakudy continues to live on in the hearts of people through his immense talent, innocent laughter, and natural humor.
