A heavy crowd was felt on the court premises in the wake of the verdict. The court ordered a one-line statement that all were acquitted. District Principal Sessions Court Judge KK Balakrishnan heard the case. KK Balakrishnan is the eighth judge to hear the case.
Mohammad Riaz Maulavi, a native of Kotak, who was a teacher of the old Churi Madrasa, was killed on March 20, 2017. The case is that Riyaz, who was sleeping in a room inside the mosque, trespassed and killed the Maulvi by slitting his throat. The investigation team had stated in the charge sheet submitted to the court that the accused had committed the murder with an ulterior motive to create communal tension.
Earlier, the State Minority Commission had rejected the plea submitted to investigate the conspiracy in the case. After examining the state crime branch report and evidence that Riyaz Maulvi’s murder was an act of drunkenness and there was no other conspiracy, the minority commission rejected the petition to investigate the conspiracy.
