State to Decide on Electricity Tariff Hike Today; 10–20 Paise Increase Per Unit Likely

Thiruvananthapuram: A decision on increasing electricity tariffs in the state is expected today. The hike is likely to be between 10 to 20 paise per unit. Members of the Regulatory Commission will meet the Chief Minister today to inform him of the proposed hike, after which an official notification will be issued. However, the request by KSEB (Kerala State Electricity Board) to implement a special summer tariff is unlikely to be approved.

KSEB had proposed a summer tariff of 10 paise per unit during the summer months. The government had already expressed agreement with the idea of a general tariff hike. This comes as another blow to consumers amidst the steep rise in the prices of essential goods. KSEB cited several reasons for the hike, including reduced domestic electricity production, increased costs of purchasing power from external sources, and rising operational and maintenance expenses.

The initial plan was to implement the new tariff from November 1. However, the decision was postponed due to the byelections. KSEB has now proposed a tariff hike, including the summer tariff, from January to May. The drop in domestic power generation has become a major challenge, making the tariff increase unavoidable, according to Minister K. Krishnankutty.

During the summer, electricity purchases from external sources become more expensive, prompting the consideration of a summer tariff. The Minister also mentioned that apart from the tariff hike, special rates specifically for the summer season are being considered. Differential rates for day and night usage are also under review.
