Kannur: A woman has alleged loss of vision following nasal surgery. The incident occurred at Anjarakandy Medical College, where Rasna (30), a resident of Mayamankandy in Anjarakandy, reportedly lost vision in her right eye after undergoing surgery for nasal growth. A complaint has been submitted to the Chief Minister and the Health Minister regarding the matter.
The surgery was performed on October 24. Rasna’s husband, K. Shajil, and her brother, T.V. Sreejith, revealed during a press conference that the loss of vision occurred after a three-hour-long surgery. When Rasna informed the doctors about the issue immediately afterward, she was told it was due to swelling and that her vision would return in two days. Shajil added that as redness appeared in and around her right eye, the doctors suggested consulting an ophthalmologist.
Ophthalmologists concluded that the nerve supplying the retina was damaged during the surgery, causing a blockage of blood flow. They recommended immediate treatment. When Rasna returned to the medical college, an injection was administered to dissolve the blood clot. She was assured that her vision would return within two weeks.
However, when no improvement was observed even by the next night, she was discharged and taken to Aravind Eye Hospital in Coimbatore. It was there that it was confirmed Rasna had completely lost vision in her right eye. The doctors also determined that her right eye’s mobility towards the nasal side was impaired and that her vision could not be restored.
Rasna, who worked at the Akshaya Centre in the Kannur University Thavakkara campus, is now unable to continue her job due to the loss of vision, her brother Sreejith stated. The family has decided to pursue legal action. Rasna’s father, Rajan, Thalassery Block Panchayat member M. Rameshan, and CPM Area Committee member K. Rajin also participated in the press conference.
