Maldives: Former Maldives Minister Mariam Shivuna, who was suspended after posting a controversial post against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep, has apologized. The apology comes in the context of Mariam’s latest post also being controversial.
We sincerely apologize for the confusion caused by the recently posted content. The image used in the post was noticed to resemble the Indian flag. Just want to make it clear that it is not intentional. Maryam Shinua X noted that she will be more careful in the future.
In a post criticizing the opposition party Maldivian Democratic Party, Mariam replaced the party logo with an image resembling Ashoka’s pillar. Then many people came forward against Maryam, pointing out that she insulted the Indian flag. With this, Maryam came forward stating that she did not intend to defame India or the Indian national flag and was criticizing the opposition party. She apologized for the mistake she made.
Then in January, Maryam Shinua and two other ministers were suspended for making anti-India statements. The statement of the ministers pointed out that the Indian leadership is trying to promote the Lakshadweep islands as a tourist destination against the Maldives.
