N.I.A. Kochi headquarters opened. After Delhi, NIA’s second building in the country is in Kerala. Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the three-acre complex in Kalamassery online from Delhi. The office operation will be shifted to Kalamassery within two weeks from the rented building in Kadavantra Girinagar, Kochi. The office building has been prepared on three acres of land with state-of-the-art facilities such as interrogation rooms of international standards.
Kerala is known as the university and paradise of terrorists. After Kashmir, Kerala is the most threatened place in the country’s security. The administrative block of 3,276 square meters consists of question room, cells and intelligence systems with modern systems. Behind and to the sides is a residential complex for 49 officers and their families. NIA currently has around 70 officers in Kochi, including those on deputation. There is also a separate barrack for security personnel at the front. The complex also includes a community center.
The Kochi unit headed by SP is under the DIG office in Hyderabad. Tamil Nadu, Lakshadweep and Pondicherry regions come under this. NIA sources indicated that once its own office starts functioning, the number of officers will be increased and it will be elevated to a unit headed by DIG.. The NIA was formed under the Central Home Department in the wake of the 2008 Mumbai terror attack, after Delhi, Guwahati and Hyderabad, the fourth office was opened in Kochi in 2011 and Mancheri in 2013.
