The tragic road accident that claimed six lives, including MBBS students, last Monday continues to stir emotions across the state. The Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) has registered a case against the car owner, Shamil Khan, alleging illegal rental practices.
An investigation revealed that the vehicle was being operated as an unauthorized taxi. The accident report will be submitted to the court today, including evidence of the payment made through Google Pay to rent the vehicle. Shamil Khan initially claimed he had no commercial arrangement with the students and had lent the car as a gesture of goodwill. However, he lacked a license to rent out vehicles legally.
Shamil Khan’s earlier statement recorded by the RTO mentioned that the deceased Mohammed Jabbar had requested the car, citing familiarity from a prior interaction. “Jabbar asked for a car, saying it was a holiday, and they wanted to go to a movie. Initially, I refused, but after speaking with Jabbar’s brother, I agreed. They said there would be six passengers, not eleven,” Shamil stated after the incident.
The case has brought attention to the increasing misuse of private vehicles for commercial purposes without proper authorization.
