ASHA Workers’ Strike Completes One Month; Secretariat Blockade on 17th

It has been a month since ASHA workers began their day-and-night strike in front of the Secretariat. On February 10, ASHA workers from various districts of Kerala began their day-and-night strike at the Secretariat.

The protest received huge public support as allegations, controversies and insults continued to pour in. Since there was no government intervention, the Ashas decided to expand the protest further.

There are various demands, including increasing the honorarium to Rs 21,000 and providing Rs 5 lakh as retirement benefit. After the strike was discussed, Minister Veena George called the protesters for a discussion. Nothing happened. The minister’s response was to protest against the center. Later, prominent figures from the political, social, and cultural sectors expressed their support. The Congress announced that it would take over the strike.

At the same time, UDF MPs will protest outside Parliament today for the benefits of Asha workers. The protest will be held at Makar Dwar at 10 am. The MPs had raised the issue in Parliament yesterday, citing the failures of the central and state governments. Notices will be issued in both houses today, demanding a discussion on issues such as constituency re-delimitation, trilingual controversy, and Manipur conflict. The opposition’s demand was rejected by both houses the other day.
