High Court Issues Stricter Guidelines for Elephant Processions, Banning Their Use in Private Events

The High Court’s appointed amicus curiae has recommended stringent regulations against the use of elephants for private events and inaugurations. Elephants must be given a mandatory rest of 24 hours between two processions, and transporting them in vehicles for more than 100 kilometers in a single day is prohibited.

During processions, elephants must maintain a minimum distance of three meters from each other when halted. Activities such as tail-pulling competitions, prostration, and flower showers are also banned. People must maintain at least a 10-meter distance from the elephants, and the report states that elephants over the age of 65 should not be used for processions.
