Paris: India’s medal hopeful wrestler Vinesh Phogat has been disqualified from the Olympics. The action was taken after it was found to be 100 grams more during the weight test. The Indian coach said that during the weight test on Wednesday morning, he was found to be 100 grams more than the permissible limit.
Phogat had to face disqualification while standing on the historic achievement of being the first Indian woman to enter the Olympic wrestling final.
The IOA said in a statement that it is with regret that Vinesh Phogat has been disqualified. Despite the team’s best efforts throughout the night, Vinesh’s weight was over 50 kg this morning. The IOA said in a statement that it is not commenting further at this time and respects Vinesh’s privacy.
In the women’s 50 kg freestyle wrestling, Vinesh reached the final by defeating Cuba’s Yuznelis Guzman in the semi-finals. Vinesh Phogat, who is participating in the third Olympics, was supposed to face America’s Sarah Hildebrand in the final at 11:30 on Wednesday night.
