The college principal and assistant professor have been suspended in connection with the ragging incident at Kottayam Nursing College. The action is being investigated against Principal Prof. Sulekha AT and Asst. Professor Ajeesh P Mani. The action was taken after it was found that the college had failed to prevent and intervene in ragging in the hostel.
The Health Minister has ordered the action. The hostel warden was an assistant professor. There is also an order to immediately remove the housekeeper-cum-security officer of the hostel. The action comes after the Director of the Medical Education Department conducted an investigation into the incident.
Five third-year general nursing students at the Government Medical College have been brutally ragging first-year students for the past three months. They also filmed the scenes of the ragging.
The police had arrested five students in the incident. The Gandhinagar police arrested Samuel Johnson (20) from Valakam, Kottayam, Rahul Raj (22) from Vandoor, Malappuram, Jeeva (18) from Nadavayal, Wayanad, Rijil Jith (20) from Payyanad, Manjeri, Malappuram, and Vivek (21) from Koruthodu, Kottayam, all senior general nursing students of the nursing college in the ragging case. It is learnt that the accused had been ragging them since the classes for the first year students started last November.
There were six boys in the first year general nursing class. All of them were subjected to ragging. The accused are currently in judicial custody.
