Law is not for threats, dominance, or exploitation but for the welfare of women: Supreme Court

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has said that laws designed for the welfare of women are not tools to punish, intimidate, dominate or exploit husbands. Justices B V Nagaratna and Pankaj Mittal observed that Hindu marriage is the foundation of a family and a sacred affair. They added that it is not a commercial venture.

The court said that in most complaints, sections of the Indian Penal Code, including rape, intimidation and domestic violence, are brought together as a “combined package”. The court observed that these legal provisions in the hands of women are meant to benefit their welfare and not as a means to punish, threaten, dominate or extort money from their husbands.
