The crucial meeting is scheduled for tomorrow. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Joe Biden will hold bilateral talks during the Quad Summit in Delaware, USA. The discussion will primarily focus on the Indo-Pacific Economic Development Program being spearheaded by the US. The main agenda of the summit is to address the challenges posed by China’s influence in the Indo-Pacific region. Topics such as diplomatic relations between countries and climate change will also be part of the discussions. Issues like health security, climate change, maritime security, and technology will be discussed by the heads of state at the summit. The Quad is an alliance of India, the United States, Australia, and Japan.
Former US President and Republican candidate Donald Trump had also announced that he would meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Trump revealed this during a campaign event in Michigan, where he praised Modi’s “remarkable personality.” The last meeting between Trump and Modi took place in February 2020.
During his presidency, Trump maintained close relations with Narendra Modi. Events like the “Howdy Modi” reception in Houston and the “Namaste Trump” program in India were part of their public engagements. Under Trump’s presidency, trade relations between the two countries improved, and several crucial defense agreements were signed. Both leaders also shared a common interest in countering China’s rise. Trump’s engagement with the Indo-American community was an important aspect of his policies. Despite occasional trade disputes, Modi and Trump worked to keep the relationship strong.
As previously indicated, Modi will arrive in Delaware on September 21, where he will first attend the Quad leaders’ summit. He will then participate in bilateral talks. On September 22, Modi will address the Indian diaspora in New York, followed by meetings with state governors and CEOs of various companies. He is also set to address the United Nations General Assembly’s “Summit of the Future” on the same day.
Since assuming office for the third term, Narendra Modi has visited Russia and Ukraine in the past two months, followed by this trip to the US. This will be the last Quad summit with the current leaders, as both Joe Biden and Japan’s Fumio Kishida will be stepping down from their positions. India is set to host the Quad summit in 2025, marking 20 years since the formation of the Quad alliance. This adds a special significance to the summit in Delaware.
