Congress leader Rahul Gandhi reportedly left for Italy for a short personal visit on Sunday amid ongoing protest by farmers against Centre’s farm laws. Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala confirmed that Gandhi will be out of India for a few days but did not disclose his destination.

As per reports, the former Congress chief left for Milan in Italy on a Qatar Airways flight in the morning. Gandhi’s grandmother lives in Italy and he visited her earlier too. The Congress leader’s abroad visit comes at a time when several opposition leaders are exerting pressure on the Centre to withdraw the contentious laws against which thousands of farmers have been protesting on various borders of the national capital for nearly a month now. The former Congress chief’s visit comes two days after he met President Ram Nath Kovind as part of party delegation to and urged that a session of Parliament should be convened to revoke the three agriculture laws. Gandhi who recently met President Kovind, was part of two separate Opposition delegations, demanding the repeal of the three laws. But both Rahul and Sonia Gandhi has missed the parliamentary debate for the three laws, due to Sonia Gandhi’s ill-health- necessitating her visit to the US. Reacting to Gandhi’s visit, Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait said that the Congress leader neither visited their protest site nor spoke to them.
