Rule Requiring Removal of Upper Garments in Temples is Obsolete, Says Swami Sachidananda

Sivagiri: There is no doubt that the requirement to remove one’s upper garment and enter the temple is unethical, says Swami Satchidananda. He said that this practice was started in the past to see the Poonul and is still continuing in many temples, adding that the stance of the Sree Narayana community should be corrected. The Swami said that this requirement is not followed in Sree Narayana Guru temples.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who spoke after Sachidananda Swami, also supported this stance. There is a requirement that one can enter temples only after removing their upper garments.

The Sree Narayana community is demanding a change in line with the times. This is likely to be a major social intervention. However, the Chief Minister clarified that no one should be forced into this matter.
