In a major action in Kandahar City, the Taliban has broken into the Kandahar central jail and released hundreds of incarcerated prisoners. The video of this entire incident is also going viral on social media. Afghan media outlets quoted Taliban spokesperson Qari Yousaf Ahmadi to confirm that the group had managed to “conquer” the Kandahar central jail on Wednesday.
Taliban spokesman Qari Yusuf Ahmadi said: “As a result of the prolonged siege and violent attacks, the Central Jail in the central city of Kandahar was completely conquered this afternoon.” The security personnel posted here surrendered while laying down their arms and all the prisoners have been released. He also said that the prisoners were “welcomed” upon their release from the Kandahar jail. This attack on the Kandahar prison comes at a time when the Taliban is rapidly busy capturing the provincial capitals of Afghanistan. In recent weeks, the government of President Ashraf Ghani has moved more than 3,000 Taliban fighters from Kandahar prison. However, even after this, there was a presence of hundreds of Taliban fighters till Wednesday. This was the reason why the Taliban attacked the prison soon after the capture of Kandahar and got the prisoners released. However, the prison complex still housed hundreds of prisoners, including Taliban fighters, at the time it was taken on Wednesday.
