Thiruvathukal double murder; Accused from Assam arrested

The accused in the Kottayam Thiruvathukal double murder case, in which businessman Vijayakumar and his wife Meera were killed, has been arrested. Amit Urang, a native of Assam, was apprehended from a poultry farm near Malappuram. The arrest was made early in the morning by the Gandhinagar Police with assistance from the Malappuram Police.

Police stated that the accused was caught from a location where several people from Assam reside together. Investigations suggest that personal enmity was the motive behind the murder. Fingerprints found on the axe used in the murder matched those of Amit, which had been previously collected during his arrest in a theft case. His fingerprints were also found on the house’s door and in various other locations inside the home. This was confirmed through detailed analysis by fingerprint experts.

The police assessment is that the murder was premeditated and carefully planned. According to their findings, Amit had been planning the crime for several days. The murder was carried out in a particularly brutal manner. Since the previous Saturday, Amit had been staying at a lodge in the city. During this time, he visited the vicinity of Vijayakumar’s house multiple times to observe the area. On Monday morning, he checked out of the lodge, went to Kottayam Railway Station in the evening, purchased a platform ticket, and entered the station. The murder was committed later that night. CCTV footage obtained by the police shows Amit leaving the lodge and heading toward the railway station.
