Three individuals were arrested at the Thalassery railway station with 258 grams of brown sugar worth ₹13 lakh. The arrested have been identified as E.A. Shuhaib (38) from Mariyas House, Palissery, Thalassery; A. Nassar (54) from Arayilakath House, Mattanpam; and Muhammad Akram (40) from AD Koya Quarters, Kayyath.
The arrest was made following a tip-off that brown sugar was being smuggled from Mumbai to Thalassery via train. Acting on the information, the police conducted a surveillance operation, and the trio was apprehended as soon as they alighted from the Netravati Express at Thalassery station. Shuhaib is reportedly associated with a travel agency, while the others are said to be unemployed.
The brown sugar was found hidden inside A. Nassar’s shoe. According to police, the accused had purchased the brown sugar from Mumbai for ₹2,20,000 and brought it to Thalassery to sell at the rate of ₹5,000 per gram. The arrest was part of an ongoing investigation focused on drug dealers operating in the Thalassery region. Police and the District Anti-Narcotics Special Action Force (DANSAF) had been monitoring drug trafficking activities for the past month, leading to the successful bust based on accurate intelligence.
It was also revealed that one of the accused, Muhammad Akram, had previously been arrested by Mumbai police in a drug smuggling case. The operation was led by New Mahe Inspector P.A. Binu Mohan, Thalassery SI P.V. Prashobh, and DANSAF squad members Sreejesh, Sujesh, Mithun, Ajith, Mahesh, Rahul, and Binu.
