Surya Surendran (24), who died after collapsing at the airport while traveling to London, is the initial report of the police that the cause of death was a heart attack due to the ingestion of the poison of oleander plant. Surya, who was a nurse, left for work in London when she died leaving her family in tears.
Three weeks ago, the results of sending the leaf, flower and blood sample of Surya to the lab in Thiruvananthapuram for expert examination have not been received. Only when it is obtained can it be confirmed whether the poison of the plant has gone inside. After that the police will give a final report.
Surya collapsed at the airport on the 28th. He then died while undergoing treatment. The police, who registered a case of unnatural death, had taken the statements of the doctors who treated them. Surya had told the doctors that while talking on the phone before leaving for the trip, he had inadvertently pinched a leaf and a flower and chewed it in his mouth and spat it out immediately. On examination, it was found to be a plant.
After post-mortem at Alappuzha Medical College Hospital, the internal organs were sent to the lab in Thiruvananthapuram. Haripad SHO K Abhilash Kumar, who is investigating the case, said there are no other doubts in Surya’s death. Experts have pointed out that the leaves, flowers and fruits of the ara plant are poisonous and can be the cause of death. After the incident, many Devaswom boards have banned the offering of Aralipu.
