Thiruvananthapuram: Congress suffered another setback in the capital. Congress leader Thangamani Divakaran joined the BJP just days before the Lok Sabha elections. Union Minister and NDA candidate from Thiruvananthapuram Rajeev Chandrasekhar accepted the party membership. The party entry was in the presence of district president VV Rajesh and senior BJP leaders.

She responded that she was leaving the party after criticizing the Congress for its reluctance to respect women. She has been an active worker of Congress since the age of 27. In 2011, Thangamani had sought the seat as a Congress candidate from Attingal. An AICC member, Thangamani is currently a state committee member of the Mahila Congress. Earlier she was the general secretary of Mahila Congress. Thangamani is also the sister of director and CPM comrade Lenin Rajendran.
