Congress top leadership refuses to accept Navjot Singh Sidhu’s resignation

The top leadership of the Indian National Congress (INC) has not accepted Navjot Singh Sidhu’s resignation, which was submitted on Tuesday, reported news agency ANI. The party has asked state leaders to resolve the matter at their own level first.

Sidhu on Tuesday submitted his resignation as the chief of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, plunging the party into a fresh crisis just months ahead of the assembly elections in the state. In his resignation letter addressed to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Sidhu cited being required to “compromise” as the reason behind his move that shocked the state’s political fraternity. Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira also said that they have urged Sidhu to withdraw his resignation. After Sidhu’s resignation, many of his loyalists have too put in their papers. Hours after Navjot Singh Sidhu stepped down as president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC), state minister Razia Sultana has now resigned from Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi’s cabinet. In her resignation letter, she says that her decision to resign as a cabinet minister is “in solidarity with Navjot Singh Sidhu”. Chahal who was appointed as the Treasurer of PPCC on September 21, submitted his resignation to the Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi. Yoginder Dhingra and Gautam Seth resigned as General Secretary and General Secretary (in-charge training) of Punjab Congress.
