Huge increase in child suicides in the state, 158 childrens died in six months

158 suicide cases reported in the state this year. A committee appointed by the state government studied and reported on child suicides. The committee concluded that parents could not identify their children’s mental problems and that the lack of communication between parents and children could be considered a cause of suicide. It is also a matter of concern that these suicides took place during the lockdown period. This is a time when there are no academic or school pressures.

Of the children who committed suicide, 50 were gifted learners. 74 children had an average level of learning. The Committee recommends that arrangements be made at all levels to identify children at risk of suicide. The family needs to take steps for this. The report also recommends that positive parenting be encouraged in the family and that children be found to spend more time with their children, avoiding emotional and physical abuse.

The report covers the number of suicides between February and July 31. Most of those who committed suicide were girls. At the same time, most of those who commit suicide at a young age are boys. According to the report, 19 children were killed due to parental quarrels and 14 due to love issues.

But according to police, 173 children committed suicide between March 23 and September 7. This is much more than the committee report. During the same period last year, 142 children committed suicide, according to police figures. Children from nuclear families accounted for 83 percent of all suicides. From February to July 31, Malappuram district had the highest number of child suicides. 22 people. In Thiruvananthapuram district, 21 people committed suicide, and in Thrissur 18 children committed suicide. Kottayam district has the lowest number of children committing suicide. Of the 158 people who committed suicide, 90 were girls. Of the 18 children who committed suicide in Thrissur district, 13 were girls, the report said. Most of the victims were children between the ages of 15 and 18. According to the report of the Sreelekha Committee, there are more girls than this. Anupama TV, TK Anandi, Anil Prabhakaran, Dr. Jayaprakash were the members of the committee.
