India’s youngest organ donor at 20 months

A 20-month-old toddler named Dhanishtha from Delhi’s Rohini has served a noble cause far beyond her years. She has become the youngest cadaver donor, donating multiple organs – giving a new lease of life to five patients. Her heart, liver, kidneys, and corneas were retrieved at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital and were used for five patients.

On January 8, Dhanishta fell from the first-floor balcony of her home while playing in the evening and became unconscious. She was rushed to Gangaram Hospital where despite the best efforts of the doctors, she did not regain consciousness. The doctors declared her brain dead on January 11. All other organs were working in excellent condition. Inspite of the irreparable loss, her parents, Ashish Kumar and Babita, decided to donate Dhanishtha’s organs to inspire others to come forward and save lives. The decision of donating her organs came voluntarily from her parents after they saw the plight of patients during their stay in the hospital.
