Thiruvananthapuram: Leptospirosis has raised concerns as it spreads across the state. In just one month, eight people have died from the disease. In light of this, the Health Department has urged the public to remain vigilant.
With the continuous rainfall, the Health Department has also warned of a potential increase in dengue cases. While election politics heats up outside, the state is grappling with a fever outbreak. According to the latest update from the Health Department, 9,803 people sought treatment for fever in just one day. Among them, 152 showed symptoms of dengue, and 35 cases were confirmed. 24 cases of leptospirosis have been confirmed, with 9 people currently undergoing treatment for the disease, one of whom has died.
Over the past month, 179 cases of leptospirosis have been reported, and approximately 150 individuals have sought treatment for its symptoms. With eight deaths confirmed, there are suspicions that leptospirosis may have contributed to the deaths of four more individuals.
Additionally, 306 cases of jaundice have been confirmed this month, and health department figures indicate that 64 people have died from jaundice this year. Fifty-eight deaths have been attributed to H1N1 influenza so far this year. The erratic rainfall is said to be the cause of both dengue and leptospirosis outbreaks, with the Health Department repeatedly advising the public to act with caution. Public health experts suggest that, beyond awareness campaigns, the Health Department must take urgent action.
