Relatives taken life of teenage Indian girl over wearing jeans

A 17-year-old girl from Uttar Pradesh’s Devariya district was killed by her grandfather and uncles over wearing jeans in the village. The grandfather and an auto driver, who had helped in disposing of the body, were arrested. The incident was reported from Mauadeeh police station area on Thursday.

Last week, Neha  Paswan was allegedly beaten to death by members of her extended family in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh because they didn’t like her wearing jeans. Her mother, Shakuntala Devi Paswan, told that the teenager had been severely beaten with sticks by her grandfather and uncles after an argument over her clothes at their home in Savreji Kharg village. Finding her in a critical condition, they rushed her to hospital but she, however, collapsed on the way to the hospital. Panicked by the sudden death of the teenager, the family members also tried to throw the body from the bridge. The body, however, got stuck and remained there till police arrived and took it away for post mortem. The maternal uncle of the girl filed an FIR against four people, including the grandfather. Cops have arrested the grandfather and an auto driver, who helped him in throwing the body. The search is on for the others. The post-mortem examination has also confirmed severe injury and fracture in the head. Police, however, said the story of family members being angry over her insistence on wearing jeans is not very convincing. The reason for the incident appears to be something else, which the family members are trying to hide and investigations are on, police said.
