In a major anti-drug operation off the Gujarat coast, authorities have seized narcotics worth ₹1,800 crore. The joint operation was conducted by the Indian Coast Guard and the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), during which 300 kilograms of drugs were confiscated. The recovered consignment has been handed over to the ATS for further investigation, according to the ICG.
This operation comes as part of the central government’s mission for a “Drug-Free India,” with intensified efforts to dismantle drug rackets across the country. According to government data, law enforcement agencies, including the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and various police forces, seized narcotics worth ₹16,914 crore across India in 2024 alone.
Between 2004 and 2014, around 3.63 lakh kilograms of narcotics were seized. In the decade following, from 2014 to 2024, that figure surged nearly sevenfold to 24 lakh kilograms. The total value of drugs destroyed between 2004 and 2014 was ₹8,150 crore. Over the past 10 years, this amount has skyrocketed to ₹56,861 crore—a sevenfold increase, highlighting the scale of the government’s intensified crackdown.
