Indian Air Force Celebrates 92 Years of Excellence

Today marks the 92nd anniversary of the Indian Air Force (IAF), a force that continues to astonish with its prowess in the skies. With approximately 1.70 lakh personnel, the IAF is the fourth largest air force in the world. Established in 1932, the IAF has grown from a small fleet of four Westland Wapiti aircraft to a formidable force, playing a crucial role in national security and humanitarian missions.

Originally formed to assist the Royal Air Force during British rule, the IAF earned the title “Royal” after its vital contributions in World War II, especially in halting Japan’s advance in Burma. However, after India became a republic in 1950, the “Royal” title was dropped, and the Indian Air Force began its journey towards becoming a leading air power globally.

The IAF has participated in several major operations, including the four wars with Pakistan, Operation Vijay, Operation Meghdoot, and Operation Cactus, among others. It also contributes to United Nations peacekeeping missions, showcasing its global presence.

Today, the IAF boasts an impressive lineup of indigenous and international aircraft, including HAL Tejas LCA, MiG-21, Sukhoi-30 MKI, MiG-27, Jaguar, and MiG-29, defending India’s skies. This year’s theme, “IAF: Capable, Strong, and Self-reliant,” highlights the force’s technical advancements and readiness. The grand air show held at Marina Beach in Chennai attracted over 1.3 million spectators, setting a record in the Limca Book of Records.
