Trump Warns Saudi Arabia to Reduce Oil Prices

US President Donald Trump has called on Saudi Arabia and other OPEC nations to immediately reduce oil prices, stating that a drop in oil prices would expedite the end of the Russia-Ukraine war. He also blamed OPEC countries for being partially responsible for the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.

Ending the Russia-Ukraine war was one of Trump’s promises before his inauguration, and this announcement is part of his efforts to fulfill that pledge. Trump made the appeal while addressing the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, through a virtual session.

“My appeal to Saudi Arabia and OPEC nations is simple: Reduce oil prices as quickly as possible. You must do this. Honestly, I was surprised they didn’t act to reduce prices before the U.S. presidential elections. Lowering oil prices will bring a swift end to the Russia-Ukraine war. OPEC nations bear partial responsibility for what is happening in Ukraine now. Millions of lives have been lost, and with reduced oil prices, interest rates worldwide should also drop,” Trump emphasized.

Russia is one of the world’s major oil producers. Following the war, sanctions imposed by the U.S. and European countries led Russia to sell oil at reduced prices to nations like India. Oil sales are a significant source of revenue for Russia. Trump’s strategy assumes that if OPEC nations lower oil prices, countries currently buying oil from Russia would switch to purchasing from OPEC. This would force Russia to lose revenue and compel it to withdraw from the war quickly.

Trump also spoke about the economic repercussions Russia has faced due to the war, including taxes, tariffs, and sanctions. He highlighted the impact of these measures during his address and referenced his longstanding relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Russian people. The Russia-Ukraine war began unilaterally after Ukraine, a former Soviet Republic, decided to join the European Union.
