Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir since Taliban took over Kabul. With the changing situation in Afghanistan, there is concern about growing radicalisation in Kashmir Valley. The meeting was attended by army chief MM Naravane, Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Secretary RAW Samant Goel and other stakeholders in Jammu Kashmir. Paramilitary chiefs Pankaj Singh of Border Security Force and Kuldip Singh of CRPF were also present.

Sources said Shah enquired about the security concerns arising out of developments in Afghanistan from top officials of the security establishment present in the meeting. Steps being taken to check infiltration from across the border and maintain peace in the union territory, official sources said. He also took stock of the progress in development projects in the Union territory. The meeting is believed to have discussed about the political and security implications in the Kashmir valley following the death of hardline Hurriyat Conference chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani also. There have been reports that Pakistan-based terror groups Jaish-e-Mohammad and Lashkar-e-Taiba, both active in Jammu and Kashmir and involved in a large number of terror attacks in the past, have shifted their bases to Afghanistan with a friendly Taliban regime in place. The Home Ministry figures indicate that around 200 terrorists are still active in the Kashmir Valley and most of them belong to Jaish and Lashkar and a few to Al Badr. Also the figures indicate that so far, 82 people have gone missing from their homes and reports indicate that they have joined terror groups.

Sirajuddin Haqqani, the new acting interior minister of Afghanistan, is the head of the terror group Haqqani network, which was responsible for attacks on Indian assets, including the Indian embassy in Kabul, in the past.
