In a continuing wave of violence against Hindus in Bangladesh, Islamic extremists have killed a Hindu student. Arnab Kumar Sarker, a 26-year-old student at Khulna University, was shot in the head by the extremists on Friday night in the Tentultala area of Khulna city. The attackers fled the scene immediately after the brutal murder.
Arnab had been drinking tea near a tea stall when a group of extremists on motorcycles approached and shot him. Local residents quickly assisted him and rushed him to the City Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead upon arrival. The police have started an investigation to determine the motive behind the killing.
This incident is part of a growing pattern of attacks against Hindus in Bangladesh, especially after political tensions erupted following the ousting of Sheikh Hasina in August 2024. Since then, attacks on Hindu temples, shops, and businesses have been on the rise, with at least 205 incidents reported in the first three days following the unrest in Dhaka. Muslim students have forced over 60 Hindu teachers and government officials to resign from their positions.
Other recent violent incidents include an attack on a Hindu procession carrying a Ganapati idol in Chittagong on September 6 and the destruction of Hindu idols by extremist Yasin Mia in Gauripur, Mymensingh, on September 25, in the lead-up to Durga Puja celebrations.
