New Delhi: BJP MP Om Birla was elected as the Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha by voice vote. Om Birla will be the speaker for the second time in a row. The opposition did not demand a poll. Om Birla won the third consecutive term from Kota in Rajasthan and was the Speaker of the 17th Lok Sabha.
Kodikunnil Suresh had submitted his nomination papers for the post of Speaker.. Kodikunnil Suresh was declared a loser when the central government ignored the pressure strategy of the Congress that if the post of Deputy Speaker was not given to the Congress, it would stop the opposition candidate in the Speaker election.
Om Birla, who has done excellent work as Lok Sabha Speaker for the last five years, was given a second term when the BJP leadership assessed that his wealth of experience would be beneficial.
