‘Flying Sikh’ Milkha Singh dies of pandemic-related complications at 91

Legendary Indian athlete Milkha Singh died on Friday night with Covid-19 related issues in a Chandigarh hospital. He was 91. Milkha Singh had tested positive for Covid-19 last month. Milkha Singh’s wife Nirmal Kaur had passed away just five days ago due to the same illness.

The Padma Shri awardee, who was nicknamed ‘The Flying Sikh’ for his accomplishments, is survived by his golfer son Jeev Milkha Singh and three daughters. Legendary Indian Sprinter Shri Milkha Singh ji was admitted in the ICU of Covid Hospital of PGIMER on 3rd June 2021 and was treated for Covid there till 13th June when after putting up a valiant battle with Covid, he was tested negative. The former sprinter, who represented India in the 1956 and 1964 Olympics, was admitted to the ICU ward of the hospital on June 3 due to falling oxygen levels. His condition became critical on Friday evening as he developed complications, comprising fever and falling oxygen saturation levels in the intensive care unit of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) Hospital. The admission came just 4 days after he was discharged from a Mohali hospital at the request of his family members.

President Ram Nath Kovind and Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu consoled the legendary sprinter’s death. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Minister Amit Shah, Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Kiren Rijiju along with Former Union Minister Suresh Prabhu to Shah Rukh Khan, everyone mourned the loss of one of independent India’s most colossal sporting icons.
