Philipose Mar Chrysostom Mar Thoma Valiya Metropolitan, the emeritus Metropolitan of
the Malankara Marthoma Syrian Church passed away at a private hospital in Thiruvalla, Kerala on Wednesday. The 104 year old Metropolitan was the senior most metropolitan of any Christian denomination in the world. He had been undergoing treatment for old age-related ailments.
Mar Chrysostom Valiya Matropolitan had celebrated his birthday on April 27 at a private medical college at Thiruvalla. He was admitted to the hospital following urinary infection and had tested Covid positive. He later tested negative and was discharged from the hospital on Tuesday. However, his health deteriorated around midnight and he breathed his last at 1.15 am. Known for his pleasant attitude, the bishop was unparalleled with his touching style of speech full of humorous statements. Many books and documentaries have been published containing his humorous speeches and talks. Dr. Philipose Mar Chrysostom was the oldest bishop in the world and the longest-serving bishop of the churches in India. He became the Metropolitan of the Mar Thoma Church on October 23, 1999, and the Valiya Metropolitan or Metropolitan Emeritus after resigning due to old age and health issues.
An outstanding religious dignitary with a genuine humanitarian outlook and global vision, Mar Chrysostom was awarded Padma Bhushan by President Ram Nath Kovind in 2018. He is credited with implementing and formulating many projects to improve the social, economic and cultural condition of the poor and deprived.
