Palakkad custodial death, investigation by crime branch

Palakkad: The District Crime Branch is investigating the case of the Palakkad Excise suspect who hanged himself inside the lock-up while in police custody. Investigation will be conducted under the leadership of Crime Branch DYSP.

Shojo John, a native of Idukki, died. A team led by the Palakkad Excise CI reached Shojo’s house in Katangkot yesterday evening. After the search, 2 kg hashish oil was recovered from the house.

Shojo John was taken into custody and taken first to the Excise Office and then to the Range Office. He was found hanging inside the lock-up around 7 am. But the family alleges that Shojo’s death is mysterious.

The footage of Shojo committing suicide has been caught on the CCTV camera in the office. The police will check it. Departmental action will be taken against the two persons who were on night duty in the incident. Hashish oil worth around Rs 25 lakh was recovered from Shojo’s house. The primary conclusion of excise is that it was brought from Visakhapatnam for retail sale. He kept a dog at home to resist outside scrutiny. Shojo, a tipper driver, has 3 children.
