Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin has said he accepts in principle the US proposal for a 30-day ceasefire with Ukraine. But he said any ceasefire must lead to lasting peace and address the root causes of the conflict.
“We agree with the proposal for a ceasefire to end hostilities, but we want this ceasefire to lead to lasting peace and eliminate the root causes of this crisis,” Putin told reporters in the Kremlin after talks with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.
Putin questioned what the ceasefire meant in practice, raising concerns about Ukrainian incursions into Russian territory and the wider implications along the 2,000-kilometer front.
Putin thanked US President Donald Trump for his keen interest in resolving the war. He also thanked the leaders of China, India, Brazil and South Africa for their efforts to bring about peace.
